Historic homes. Complex rooflines. Box gutters. Soldered flashings. Serving Hyde Park, Mariemont, Oakley, Mt. Lookout, Norwood, Anderson, Blue Ash, and all of Greater Cincinnati — done right.
Cincinnati's architecture is unlike almost any other city its size in the Midwest. The central neighborhoods — Hyde Park, Mariemont, Mt. Lookout, Oakley, Norwood, Madeira — contain some of the best-preserved early 20th century residential architecture in Ohio. Tudor revivals, Victorian two-stories, Craftsman bungalows, and Italianate colonials line these neighborhoods with steep, complex rooflines, masonry chimneys, decorative dormers, and built-in box gutters that were standard on quality construction a century ago. These homes are beautiful. They're also demanding when it comes to roofing.
The critical distinction on Cincinnati's historic housing stock is the flashing work. Every chimney, every valley, every dormer-to-wall junction, every built-in gutter — those are the points where water finds its way in when the craftsmanship isn't there. We hand-solder every one of those connections using old-school tin man technique. Permanent metallic bonds, not caulk that cracks in five years. On a Mariemont Tudor or a Hyde Park Victorian with multiple roof planes, the difference between soldered and caulked flashings is the difference between a roof that performs for 30 years and one that develops chronic leaks long before its time.
We also serve Cincinnati's newer suburban markets — Anderson Township, Blue Ash, Madeira, Symmes Township — where 1980s and 1990s construction is reaching end-of-shingle-life and needs full replacement with modern materials and proper ventilation. The standard is the same regardless of the home's age: every flashing soldered, every penetration done right, ventilation assessed and corrected if needed.

Historic Cincinnati Neighborhoods: Hyde Park, Mariemont, Mt. Lookout, Oakley, Norwood, Madeira, O'Bryonville, Columbia-Tusculum, and East Walnut Hills — these areas have some of the most architecturally significant residential homes in Ohio. Many have box gutters, multiple chimneys, slate elements, and complex valley configurations. This is exactly the work we're built for.
East Side / Hamilton County: Anderson Township, Symmes Township, Loveland, Milford, New Richmond — primarily 1970s through 1990s construction reaching replacement age. Asphalt systems with ventilation that was undersized from the original build. We assess and correct ventilation as part of every replacement.
North Hamilton County: Blue Ash, Montgomery, Kenwood, Sycamore Township, Deer Park — established upscale neighborhoods with a mix of mid-century and newer construction. Premium materials, proper installation, no shortcuts.
Close-In West Side: Price Hill, Delhi Township, Cheviot, North College Hill — older working-class communities with housing stock that often hasn't been touched since original construction. These roofs need honest assessments and fair prices, not overselling.
Box gutter failure is the headline issue on Cincinnati's pre-1950 homes. Built-in gutters recessed into the roofline require soldered metal seams to stay watertight. Decades of freeze-thaw cycles fail those seams, and water backs up under the roofline — often causing structural damage long before it's visible inside the home. We restore these correctly: stripping out failed material, re-lining, and soldering every seam and junction.
Chimney flashing failure is the most common source of leaks on Cincinnati's older brick homes. Step flashing that was caulked instead of properly installed, counter-flashing that has pulled away from mortar joints, and lead flashing that has simply aged past its life. We install new step flashing woven properly into the shingles, set counter-flashing into the mortar, and solder every seam.
Ice damming affects Cincinnati homes every winter — particularly older homes with minimal attic insulation and inadequate ventilation. Proper ventilation correction combined with ice and water shield at the eaves eliminates this permanently.
Hail impact damage is often invisible from street level but significant on the roof surface. Granule loss from hail dramatically shortens shingle life and compromises the waterproof layer. A proper post-storm inspection finds this damage when an insurance claim is still valid.
Cincinnati's residential architecture spans an unusual range. In the historic neighborhoods: Tudor revivals with steep cross-gabled rooflines and decorative half-timbering; Victorian two-stories with hipped roofs, ornate cornice details, and box gutters; Craftsman bungalows with wide overhangs and exposed rafter tails; Colonial revivals with symmetrical gable roofs and brick chimneys on every ridge. Each of these styles presents specific flashing challenges that require real craft — not production-line techniques.
In Cincinnati's suburban areas: Ranch homes from the 1950s-60s with low-slope roofs and minimal attic depth; Split-levels and bi-levels from the 1970s-80s with multiple rooflines and awkward transitions; Colonial two-stories from the 1980s-90s with standard asphalt systems now reaching 25-30 years; and newer custom homes with complex architectural rooflines, multiple materials, and high-end finish expectations. We handle all of them.
"Our Hyde Park home has one of those complicated older rooflines — multiple valleys, two chimneys, a dormer. Great American soldered every single flashing point. The workmanship is exceptional and you can see the difference from the street."
"After hail hit our Mariemont home I called three roofers. Great American was the only one who explained the insurance process clearly and actually showed up to the adjuster meeting. Full replacement, paid by insurance. I'm grateful."
"Fast scheduling, clean crew, zero mess left behind. Our Anderson Township roof looks better than new and Shane walked me through every step. This is what a professional contractor looks like."
Yes — this is one of our core specialties. Cincinnati's central neighborhoods have some of the most architecturally complex homes in the region. We hand-solder every flashing point using old-school tin man technique — what box gutters, chimney step flashings, and complex valley work require. Most roofers caulk these points. Caulk fails. Soldered metal doesn't.
Cincinnati averages 20-25 freeze/thaw cycles per winter, plus aggressive hail and wind in spring and fall. Every freeze-thaw cycle works at any gap in flashings or sealant. Caulked flashings that look fine in year three are often actively leaking by year seven. Soldered flashings eliminate this failure mode entirely.
